Artnot Art Museum 75th Regional

Extinguished

My painting Extinguished is on display at the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira, NY. It has been included in the 75th Regional Exhibition. Here is my statement about this painting...

My work focuses on the narrative landscape. Trees serve as the subject matter and inspiration for many of my paintings. From the saplings to the scarred, I explore symbols of humanity: life and death, growth and change, rebirth and sustainability. I find a human connection—a universal scenario.  Extinguished is one of a pair of paintings that makes up the body of work PassageGenesis is the painting of birth, where you have a small sapling growing in the shadows and coming into the light. Extinguished is the end of life as symbolized by the last light of the day hitting the top of the tree. Now that this tree is dying, lichen is flourishing, vines and creatures occupy the physical space of the tree, it sustains life… nature’s cycle.

If you're in the area, stop in. The show will be there all summer. Barbara has a piece too, The Standoff.

The End of Genesis

Working on Genesis, 72x72 inches

Putting some of the final touches on Genesis. This painting completes my White Pine Suite which has been an ongoing series for the past two and a half years. Genesis and it's companion Extinguished, which can be seen in the background, complete Passage which is the final section of this body of work.

I started the companion piece today, "Emergence".

"Extinguished" Day 5

The painting needs a harmonizing glaze and then some opaque painting into the sky and then building textures in the distant tree line and ground plane. Getting closer.

Getting There "Extinguished"

End of the work day, big paintings are a battle

After a few days of working on the painting a lot of ground has been covered and a lot more work needs to be done.

Day 3 on "Extinguished"

"Extinguished" in progress

After letting a few days go by to enable the paint to set up, I went at this painting strong today -- laid in some big shapes, painted some of the sky closer to what I've been looking for. The painting is well on it's way and I have a very good feeling of how this will develop -- a lot more work to do.

Finalist

Rising Son, oil/panel, 36x36

"Rising Son" is a finalist in the Raymar Art 5th Annual Fine Art Competition. Judge Robert Lemler commented as follows, "I am knocked out by this painting. It has a clarity of atmosphere that is very appealing. The strong complimentary colors, sharp value contrasts, interesting brushwork and well suggested detail make this painting very striking! Don’t miss the beautiful variation in the color temperature of the snow..."
